Everyone’s talking about mineral mocktails! What’s the hype all about?
Mineral mocktails are simply a way to get more minerals! We get minerals from the foods we eat (especially from fruits, vegetables, and animal proteins), but we can boost our mineral intake with hydration as well!
But WHY do we need more minerals? Well, let me ask you this:
Are you struggling with being tired all the time?
Constantly bloated?
Feeling puffy?
Peeing all day even though you drink a lot of water?
Muscle cramps?
Sleep issues?
Skin breakouts?
Very sore after workouts?
Intense cravings?
Constipation?
Pregnant, postpartum, or breastfeeding?
….you probably need more minerals.
Minerals run the body. They are like the spark plugs in our cells and optimize almost every system in the body. We need more minerals these days because of endless stress (physical, emotional, mental) and our soil isn’t as nutrient-rich as it once was, which impacts our food supply.
The 4 major minerals in our body include sodium, magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Most of us need a boost in these minerals on a daily basis.
Sodium: we need it for maintaining good fluid balance, good blood pressure, proper stomach acid levels for digestion, good blood sugar levels, and more. We get sodium mostly from the salt we add to our food and also things like sauerkraut, condiments, and pickled vegetables.
Most of us have been taught to avoid sodium in general for better health, but the opposite is true. If you’re eating a whole food focused diet with minimal ultra processed foods high in sodium – you need to be getting enough sodium from salting your food and mineral mocktails/electrolyte products.
(If you have specific blood pressure or heart/kidney conditions, this is certainly individualized and I recommend consulting your doctor)
Magnesium: we need it for muscle relaxation, nervous system support, optimal gut function, energy production, and more! Magnesium is one of the minerals we burn through the fastest with daily stress and it’s one that we simply do not get enough of from food alone. Good food sources include dark leafy greens, squash, seafood, and chocolate.
Potassium: we need it for optimal hydration, good blood pressure, good thyroid hormone function, nervous system support, and more. We get lots of potassium from foods like fruits, squashes, potatoes, and coconut water, but most do not meet the daily goal of about 4500mg without being intentional.
Calcium: we need it for bone health, muscle contractions, good gut health, and insulin sensitivity. The best sources include dairy, dark leafy greens, and sardines (surprisingly). Calcium can be easier to get from food alone and it’s best to not supplement with calcium without proper testing.
Ok, let’s talk about the mocktails! You know that we want to focus on minerals from food first – but these mineral mocktails are going to be a delicious and fun way to boost your sodium, magnesium, and potassium intake.
With any mineral mocktail recipe, you find these are common sources of each mineral:
