When we think about making changes in our lives, whether it’s improving our health, advancing our career, or transforming our relationships, we often focus solely on changing our actions. But according to Robert Dilts’ pioneering work in neuro-linguistic programming, lasting change happens across six distinct levels, each one deeper and more impactful than the last.
Environment: The Outside World The first level is our environment – where we are and who we’re with. While this might seem superficial, our surroundings profoundly impact our behavior. Think about how differently you eat at home versus at a restaurant, or how your workout routine changes when you have access to a gym versus when you don’t. Sometimes, a simple environmental shift can catalyze bigger changes.
Behaviors: What We Do This is the level most of us focus on when trying to change – our actual actions and habits. While important, behaviors are just the tip of the iceberg. We might temporarily change what we do, but without addressing deeper levels, these changes often don’t stick.
Capabilities: How We Think and Act Our capabilities represent our skills, strategies, and mental maps – how we think about and approach challenges. This level asks not just what we do, but how we do it. Developing new capabilities, like learning to meal prep or managing stress effectively, creates a foundation for sustainable behavior change.
Beliefs and Values: Why We Do What We Do Now we’re getting deeper. Our beliefs and values drive our actions in profound ways. If you believe you’re “just not a morning person,” you’ll struggle to establish a morning exercise routine. If you value convenience over health, your food choices will reflect that. Changing at this level often creates ripple effects throughout our lives.
Identity: Who We Are This is where transformation really happens. While behavior change asks “What should I do?” identity change asks “Who am I becoming?” When you shift from “I’m trying to eat better” to “I’m becoming someone who nourishes their body,” the actions that follow feel natural rather than forced.
Purpose: The Bigger Why The deepest level connects to our sense of purpose and mission. This is about understanding how our changes serve something bigger than ourselves. When we connect our health goals to being more present for our family or having the energy to make a bigger impact in our work, we tap into a powerful source of motivation.
Why This Matters
Understanding these levels helps explain why some changes stick while others don’t. When we try to change only at the behavior level without addressing our beliefs, identity, and purpose, we’re often fighting an uphill battle.
Making It Work For You
Start by examining where you’re trying to make changes. Are you just focusing on behaviors, or are you addressing deeper levels? Here’s how to work with each level:
The Power of Alignment
The magic happens when all levels align. When your environment supports your behaviors, your behaviors align with your capabilities, your capabilities reflect your beliefs, your beliefs strengthen your identity, and your identity serves your purpose – that’s when transformation becomes not just possible but inevitable.
Remember, sustainable change isn’t just about what you do – it’s about who you become. By working at all levels, you create the conditions for lasting transformation.
